The Nifty rose 1.3% to 22,520.45 on October 9, 2026, ending an eight-week weekly losing streak that was the longest in 25 years. Information technology stocks led the rebound after Tata Consultancy Services reported quarterly earnings highlighting higher revenue contributions from artificial intelligence and strong international business growth.
Nifty 50 data showed that the index added 288.65 points, or 1.3%, to finish at 22,520.45 on October 9, 2026.
Eight weeks of decline had reduced the Nifty by 8.7% and the Sensex by 8.4% as per Nifty 50 and Sensex data. The Nifty and the Sensex had gone up by 0.4% and 0.8% respectively for the week ended October 9, 2026.
Daily Sensex data indicates that the Sensex ended 879.09 points or 1.23% higher on Friday at 72,472.33. It touched a high of 72,669.20 during the session.
Information technology stocks rose 1% during the week, according to sector data. The rebound followed Tata Consultancy Services' quarterly earnings report, which highlighted growing revenue contributions from artificial intelligence and strong international business growth.
Choice Institutional Equities said the weekly Doji reflected indecision between buyers and sellers after the prolonged correction. The Nifty continued to trade below its 50-week exponential moving average.
The 200-week exponential moving average near 22,382 remained an important technical level, and the weekly close was marginally above it, Choice Institutional Equities said.
Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and chief executive officer of HST Wealth, said a divergence in the daily relative strength index suggested that downward momentum was weakening, but price confirmation was still needed.
Radhakrishnan said the Nifty needed to sustain above 22,600 to extend the rebound towards 22,800. He said a failure to hold 22,400 could expose the index to a decline towards 22,000.
Financial stocks gained 1.7% during the week, according to sector data. The gain was attributed to strong quarterly business updates and the absence of liquidity withdrawal measures by the Reserve Bank of India after its 25-basis-point rate hike.
